They had recommended 4WD or bigger vehicles. However, we did park and then walk the 1 or 2 miles to get to the Canyon. We had a little honda fit and had no issue with this road. We were told by the gift store employee (there was no ranger in the visitor center at Prairie Creek State Park) that the road out to Gold Bluffs beach had recently been graded so it was in good condition. It's been very dry this year but still impressively green. Loved this canyon and can't even imagine how beautiful it is in winter after it's been raining a lot. (If you are a fan of the Jurassic World movie, you will recognize much of the scenery from the movie.my daughter also loved this!)

If you are in the area, have the time, and are realatively mobile and agile.Fern Canyon should be on your MUST do list. The footbridges that are installed in the summer were not yet in place, so we spent our time crossing the stream back and forth and attempting to keep our feet dry! My daughter LOVED this, and after looking at all the tall was a totally different experience and change of scenery. Everywere we looked there were gorgeous photo opportunites. We did the loop, leaving the actual "canyon" for the last stretch. There was an entry fee to the park (I believe $8) but, it was good for the day at any of the state parks.

This was my 13 y/o daughters favorite of all we did in the area.Īs many have mentioned before the drive to the trailhead is a bit harrowing, but gorgeous in itself. We absolutely loved this hike! It's a truly unique experience that you won't get anywhere else.
